Use cases
Pigtails may be used in telecommunication networks, cell tower equipment, LAN \WAN, CATV, FTTH, etc.
The optical distribution frame
is a panel for fiber optic line connection and distribution; it simplifies the management of many cables in a compact volume.
An optical cassette for FHD fibere
is used for splicing and protecting fiber optic connectors; it simplifies cable management, allows control of the bending radius.
The fiber optic terminal box
is needed to securely connect multiple fiber optic adapters, it is compact and used in LAN, CATV, FTTH, data networks, etc.
Pigtails are an important part of networks, therefore we pay special attention to their quality
High-speed data transfer
Zirconia ceramic ferrule provides minimal input and return losses.
Optical cable structure
The cable has several layers that protect the most important part, the optical fiber.
How to cut pigtail cables properly
Remove the top buffer coating using the second hole in the stripper
To the second 250 μm coating
Remove the 250 μm coating using the third hole in the stripper
As a result, you will see fiberglass
Tips:
- It is generally recommended to preheat the pigtail before cutting.
- It is recommended to remove only 1-2 cm in one action.
Two main methods of welding (splicing) fiber optic pigtails
Mechanical method
It is performed using special devices that align and hold the optical fiber ends.
Using a splicing machineg
In this case, splicing is made by fusing two fibers using a splicing machine.
Polysh types
UPC
Available type of connectors: ST, SC, LC, FC
UPC polishing is used to reduce loss and prevent power loss in the splice, and to minimize errors and heat build-up. It is popular in transmitting data over fiber optic cables with low signal strength. These connectors may be distinguished by their color. They may be blue, black, and red.
APC
Available type of connectors: SC, LC, FC
APC polished connectors are more expensive than UPC devices. They feature high reflected signal efficiency - up to 60 dB. Nominal loss does not exceed 0.2 dB, the allowed loss does not exceed 0.4 dB. The feature of APC polishing is the 8 – 9 ⁰ beveled end face angle that returns the reflected signal to the transmitter at lower power, thus minimizing system errors. The color coding is green.
Connector types
ST
Connectors of this class are obsolete, but they are still actively used, for example, in multimode systems. They are locked as bayonet connectors: inserted into the connector and slightly turned clockwise. ST connectors are made only with UPC polishing.
SC
This is one of the most commonly used types made with rectangular cross-section plastic cases, while the ferrule diameter is 2.5 mm. Its main advantage is the ease of connection; to fix it in the socket, the device must be inserted until it clicks, and it is removed the same way.
LC
They have the shape and connection type of SC connectors but have a smaller ferrule diameter, which is only 1.25 mm. The minimum connector size allows to significantly increase the port density at the distribution cross. Such a connection is convenient to make only using a special tool.
FC
An FC connector is fixed in the socket with a threaded connection and is therefore considered one of the most reliable ones. The threaded connection ensures strength and resistance to vibrations. It is also not very convenient in the case of dense connector arrangement.
Choosing the sheath material
We provide an opportunity to choose the packaging material
PVC sheath
This is the traditional type of cable sheathing most commonly used indoors. The PVC sheath consists of polyvinyl chloride; it is resistant to high temperatures; it has excellent resistance to chemicals and a long service life. Also PVC insulation can withstand strong deformation.
LSZH sheath
Its advantages are shown in the abbreviation; it stands for «Low Smoke Zero Halogen». Therefore, LSZH sheaths are used in cables laid in crowded locations, since in case of a fire, the likelihood of human poisoning by combustion products is minimized.
